Challenge After Challenge in Web Archiving

Challenge After Challenge in Web Archiving

16-10-8

Abstract / topic summary

The process of archiving the blog AQNB (https://www.aqnb.com/) revealed a long list and wide range of challenges. These included broken functionalities on the site itself, the difficulty of identifying all pages of the blog, the loss of all images on the live web site, and the limited ability of the web archiving tool to capture embedded media from platforms such as Vimeo, YouTube, and SoundCloud.

Addressing these issues required a whole toolbox of approaches, from modifying the live website and customizing the Browsertrix Crawler to filtering archived data and adding scripts to restore broken functionality.

This talk describes the archiving process, the challenges encountered, and the troubleshooting steps taken in order to achieve the best possible result. The web archive of AQNB can be viewed under https://webarchives.rhizome.org/Q16289/https://www.aqnb.com/.
